Over on the Desiring God website David Mathis has written an interesting article entitled Fasting For Beginners which is is well worth reading.

I read Piper’s book Hunger for God several years ago and was really helped by the explanation that fasting (in whatever form that takes) says in our actions that more than the gifts we want the giver.  So that like Moses following the golden calf incident in Exodus 32 we say to God…

“If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)

Moses doesn’t want the promised land of blessing without the presence of the God who blesses, and we shouldn’t want the blessings of the church, justification and future glory without the God who gives those blessings.  Fasting is a helpful way to say (and learn) that.
